This case study explores the integration of creative thinking methodologies into maritime training.
By shifting the focus from rote memorization to adaptive problem-solving, we aimed to empower seafarers to handle unpredictable situations with confidence, fostering a culture of psychological safety on board.

Seafarers face unpredictable challenges, yet maritime training prioritizes procedures over adaptive thinking. Rigid routines, hierarchy, and fear of mistakes limit idea-sharing, resulting in silent improvisation instead of shared innovation.

The learning strategy was grounded in two complementary evidence streams: domain and learning research established the wider evidence base, while UX research revealed how those issues appeared in real shipboard work.
SME-recommended maritime resources and learning research from adjacent high-pressure domains were reviewed to establish a credible evidence base for the training. These sources informed the learning strategy, content direction and design decisions rather than being presented as stand-alone theory.

AI-assisted exploratory persona interviews were used first to surface broad themes and assumptions. Because those responses remained general, interviews with real seafarers followed and provided more detailed, specific shipboard examples of routines, workarounds, pressure points and communication barriers.

The HMW opportunities were not translated directly into screens or activities. They were first filtered through the instructional approach, learner constraints and behaviour-change goals before becoming specific design decisions.

Before production, I benchmarked soft-skill microlearning and maritime learning experiences to understand how an abstract concept could be made concrete without becoming decorative.
The visual system used a restrained metaphor: a dark shipboard environment representing uncertainty, with light, sparks and points of illumination representing an idea becoming visible. The metaphor supported the message — seeing another possibility when the obvious route is not enough.
The final learning flow moved from recognition to practice, leadership response and habit-building.

Because “creative thinking” can feel abstract, the content was written around familiar shipboard moments rather than definitions. Instructional storytelling created a recognisable routine, introduced a small disruption, then used a decision and consequence to make the learner’s thinking visible.

A small, recognisable workaround — securing labels to damp cold-room shelving — was used to reframe an everyday fix as creative thinking. The reveal comes after the learner has already understood the value of the idea.
A routine inspection develops an unusual vibration. Learners choose whether to record it, experience the consequence, explain their decision to an officer, then switch perspective and respond as the leader.
Scripted and storyboarded as a short visual story. Visual assets were developed in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, then animated in Vyond.
Decision points, response states and consequence feedback were mapped before development in Storyline 360.
The wider experience combined story, audio reflection, interactive practice, an offline extension and habit-building prompts in Rise 360.
The completed learning experience can be explored through the Maritime Trainer website / free-trial environment.

The project reinforced that a soft skill becomes more credible when learners can recognise it in their own work, practise it through realistic decisions, and see how the surrounding culture responds. The design challenge was not to make seafarers “more creative”, but to make the creative thinking they already use visible, safe and repeatable.
